Current EPDs for Wood Products
List of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) available for wood products as of January 2025
Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), sometimes referred to as Type III environmental declarations, report environmental impacts from cradle to gate1 for many construction products, including wood products. They are based on detailed life cycle assessment (LCA) reports and governed by product category rules (PCRs) specific to each product type.
The wood industry was the first to develop transparent, third-party-verified EPDs in partnership with Underwriters Laboratories and in conformance with international standards (ISO 14025, 14040, 14044, and 21930).
North American Structural Wood EPDs
In 2020, the American Wood Council (AWC) and Canadian Wood Council (CWC) issued industry-average EPDs for the following North American structural wood products:
- North American softwood lumber
- North American softwood plywood
- North American oriented strand board (OSB)
- North American glued-laminated timber (glulam)
- North American laminated veneer lumber (LVL)
- North American laminated strand lumber (LSL*)
- North American wood I-joists
- Redwood lumber
Most of these EPDs are valid through July 1, 2025.* In response to industry demand for more granular data, AWC and CWC will be issuing regional EPDs in the next round. Some of these EPDs have already been released, as noted below, with more expected to be released throughout 2025.
- U.S. Inland Northwest softwood lumber
- U.S. Pacific Coast softwood lumber
- U.S. Southern softwood lumber
The EPDs for North American and U.S. structural wood products can be downloaded from AWC’s website. The LCAs that provide the basis for many of these EPDs are available from the Consortium for Research on Renewable Industrial Materials (CORRIM). Canadian regional average EPDs and LCAs for structural wood products are available from Athena Sustainable Materials Institute (ASMI).
*The LSL EPD was released in 2021 and is valid through April 1, 2026. The redwood lumber EPD was issued by AWC and is for the United States redwood lumber.
